I liked the promise that society would be exposed as the real monster, not the people it destroys. However, telling the story through a character who is purely a victim takes the film away from this goal. It is not a social critique when all the evil is concentrated in one arch-villain, while everyone else is forgiven for their good intentions. On the contrary, it should have shown that in such a brutal context, malice and compassion cannot be so easily separated. The tone was also a bit unclear – more melancholic than anything else – leaving the viewer indifferent to what was happening on screen.
